Mine, bought May 2019, came ready set up to use the USB for firmware updating. As is sadly usual for the Internet, there is a lot of undated and uncancelled "advice" around that states that you need to solder on internal connections and get a bootloader installed before the USB will work. This was NOT required for mine, it worked straight away and enabled me to load a firmware update easily that added the E016H protocol (amongst others). I'd go as far as saying one of these is an essential add-on, especially if your Transmitter can run recent OpenTX and only of course if it has a JR type module bay to fit it in!
